Judi and Fred Danforth

In 1975 Judi and Fred Danforth set up shop in the milkhouse of a Woodstock, Vermont barn with the dream of creating a line of pewter for the home. Judi had studied silversmithing at RIT School for American Craftsmen, followed by an apprenticeship in the making of pewter. Fred went to Middlebury College and knew of his New England ancestors who were pewtersmiths, but did not see himself learning the trade- which was gone from his family for 5 generations... that is, until he and Judi met! With a bit of encouragement from Judi and her teacher, Fred tried his hand at spinning pewter and 43 years later......

Over the years Danforth Pewter has evolved in many ways. From a two person shop, growing through the wholesale craft markets with many fine Vermont craftspeople, to ten years as Disney licensees for Winnie the Pooh, to the present with retail stores in Vermont, Maine, Williamsburg, Virginia and most recently National Harbor, Maryland. All the while striving to stay centered on what brought them into the craft world in the first place: the love of designing and making beautiful, functional pieces of pewter.

It has been a pleasure sharing the few days in November, when Vermont Handcrafters come together in Memorial Auditorium....and now at the Sheraton.... when we see our fellow craft community and the dedicated people who come each year to see what we do.

May the love of American craft grow and thrive for many generations to come!
