Beneath the Bark

Les Griffith

I started turning bowls in 2012. Not wanting to commit to the expense of a commercial lathe, I built my own. It has turned out to be quite functional, though I had to make a couple of concessions, such as a simple speed control mechanism, and the absence of a tail stock. Regardless, from the first bowl I turned which happened to be an amazing maple burl I have been completely enamored by the mystery of the wood, and the discovery of the hidden secrets within the various pieces. Whether it is an interesting knot, a natural scar, or just the amazing variation in grain structure, wood continues to fascinate me with each new project.
